What I love about Ayurveda is that it provides a lens to see the world. Through the framework of the gunas or qualities, we can understand how certain foods, seasons and lifestyle choices will affect our innate balance. Ayurveda teaches us how to be our own physician.
Before discovering Ayurveda, I struggled with poor digestion, fatigue, anxiety and depression.
Despite my best efforts at eating healthy, I had developed dysbiosis - a micro-biome out of balance. Frequent antibiotics during childhood coupled with bad habits in my twenties had led to an overgrowth of gut bacteria - Candidiasis.
In short, my digestion had become unmanageable.
Searching for answers, I discovered Ayurveda. I began practicing Ayurvedic food combining and eventually saw a practitioner to learn my birth constitution (prakruti) and imbalances (vikruti). My practitioner gave me dietary advice and a custom herbal formula to tackle the gut bacteria.
Immediately, my anxiety and depression began to subside.
The following spring, I underwent a week-long Panchakarma cleanse to shed toxins and restore digestion. Today, I feel better than ever. I no longer suffer from brain fog, digestive upset and poor mood.
Thanks to Ayurveda, I have the tools to create balance in my life and the space to appreciate it.
